Confidentiality

Your privacy is our priority. Confidentiality is maintained through HIPPA-compliant platforms.

Limits of confidentiality are below:

Harm to self

If I learn that a child, adolescent, or young adult has thoughts of or patterns of self-harm and suicidality, I may have to report this to a trusted caregiver, adult, or emergency service specialist.

Harm to others

If I learn that an indivdiual has intent to harm another person, I am obligated by a "duty to warn" and may have to report this to the police department as well as the intended target.

Abuse or Neglect

I am a mandated reporter and required by law and ethics code to report suspected abuse or neglect to authorities. I do not investigate suspected abuse or neglect.

Family Confidentiality:

You may have questions about what information remains confidential between Dr. Johnston, your child or teenager, and you as a caregiver. Child and adolescent confidentiality will be maintained as appropriate. Dr. Johnston communicates limits of confidentiality between caregivers and youth at the start of therapy. It may be helpful for caregivers to understand the skills youth are learning in therapy and receive updates about therapeutic progress. Youth often benefit from a caregiver or trusted adult coaching them to use skills in between sessions. There are times where children or youth may disclose sensitive information that is not essential for caregiver knowledge. This information is kept private between Dr. Johnston and her client.

Any information regarding client risk will be disclosed to caregivers to ensure child safety. This includes information about suicidal ideation, suicidal behaviors, significant self-injurious behavior, utilizing substances with the potential for permanent or life-threatening consequences (e.g., alcohol combined with benzodiazepines), assault, and intended harm to others. Like other healthcare workers, Dr. Johnston is required to report sexual assault, abuse, or neglect to authorities.
